Trauma in the infertility and perinatal context occurs when reproductive, medical, or family-building experiences overwhelm a person’s capacity to cope- leaving them feeling powerless, unseen, or unsafe in their body, relationships, or care systems. This trauma can affect both birthing and non-birthing partners, and may also impact medical professionals, support people, and loved ones who witness or are closely involved in the experience. These experiences often involve a loss of control, unmet expectations, or threats to safety, and may leave a lasting impact on a person’s sense of identity, safety, and connection to others.
